Kiev files $12 bln counterclaim against Gazprom to Stockholm crt

KIEV, Nov 5 (PRIME) -- Ukrainian energy holding Naftogaz Ukrainy has sent a U.S. $12 billion counterclaim against Russian gas giant Gazprom to the Stockholm arbitration court, Executive Director Yury Vitrenko said in a Facebook post on November 2.

“We have sent a claim on protection and counterclaim to the Stockholm arbitration. Let me remind you that Gazprom attacked Naftogaz and this is why we are defending ourselves. Gazprom turned to the Stockholm court back on April 18, 2018, asking to start the litigation… The financial effect stands at more than $12 billion,” Vitrenko said.

He said that the company expects that a decision on the new case will be made in 2021.

Vitrenko separately said that Naftogaz Ukrainy expects to charge Gazprom a U.S. $3 billion debt in 2020.

In 2018, the Stockholm arbitration court ruled that Gazprom must pay Naftogaz Ukrainy $2.56 billion for non-shipment of gas. Gazprom appealed against the decision in March and in May demanded full abolishment of the decision. Hearings of the appeal in Sweden are scheduled for September–October 2020.
